Danish for free: How to get started

The official Danish Education Programme is offered free of charge to anyone moving to Denmark, who is above 18 years of age and has received their cpr-number. This also includes frontier workers, who are employed in Denmark but maintain their address in another EU member state, as well as Danish citizens who have been living abroad for several years.

The programme is free of charge only during your first 5 years of residence in Denmark.

On average, the full programme takes two and half years to complete.

A deposit of 2.000,- dkkr. is required for certain groups (see below). This deposit will be reimbursed once you've passed parts of, or the entire, programme.

Upon moving to Denmark, you received a letter about this offer in your official, digital inbox (e-boks). Your 5-year period starts from the date of this letter.

Classes take place at Sprogcenter Vejle, located in the centre of Vejle.

Address: Damhaven 13A, 7100 Vejle.

Parking: 

Unfortunately, it is not possible to park by the school.

We refer to the nearest public car parks: Bryggen and Cronhammar. Both offer two hours of free parking.

Train and bus:

Sprogcenter Vejle is located just 1 km from Vejle Train station and main bus station.

We aim to be highly flexible to suit your needs.

You can choose between daytime, evening, Saturday, or online lessons.

Class schedule: 

• Daytime: 08:00 – 11:15 / 11:45 – 15:00

• Evening: 17:00 – 19:30

• Saturday: 08:45 – 12:30

• Online: scheduled individually

Day classes meet three days per week - for example one morning and two afternoons, or one afternoon and two mornings. When attending daytime classes, you receive 12 lessons per week in Danish Education Programme 2 and 3, and 13 lessons per week in Danish Education Programme 1.

Evening classes are twice a week, either Monday and Wednesday, or Tuesday and Thursday. The evening classes give you 6 lessons per week.

You can also study Danish on Saturdays in Danish Education Programme 2 and 3, receiving 4 lessons per week.

Danish Online is scheduled individually. Expect having to study for about 4–6 hours per week.

It is possible to switch between i.e. a day and evening schedule mid-module.

You may also join our Study Centre as often as you like. Here you will always find a teacher available to help you improve your Danish.

If you are entitled to free Danish lessons, the Jobcentre will send a referral to us.

We will then contact you as soon as poosible to invite you in for an interview. You can expect us to contact you within 2 weeks.

An interview is mandatory before being admitted to the Danish Education Programme. At the interview, you will meet with one of our counselors to talk about your educational background. You will also be given a language test so we can place you in the level most suitable for you.

Usually, you can begin classes within 1–2 weeks after the interview.

When you join our Danish language courses, you will not only learn grammar, pronunciation, and everyday Danish. You will also gain valuable cultural insights. You will learn about the Danish childcare system, democracy and monarchy, as well as the vibrant community life built on associations and volunteering. Because learning a new language is also about knowing when and how to use it in real life.

But that’s not even all.

At Language Centre Vejle, learning Danish also means becoming part of a truly diverse environment. With more than 80 nationalities represented, you will study alongside people from all over the world, broadening your horizons and making new friends. Our students often highlight this social and cultural aspect of learning Danish at a language centre. When you are building a new life in Denmark, with a new culture and a new language, it makes a big difference to be surrounded by others in the same situation.

In our Danish courses, you will meet highly qualified teachers who are specialists in teaching Danish as a second language for adults. We teach from a communicative perspective – which means we focus on Danish that you can use in your everyday life. Our approach is practical, with special attention to pronunciation and interaction, because we know this is what you need most – and it is the best way to learn your new language.

The official Danish Education Programme is offered free of charge only for the first five years of living in Denmark. If you have lived here longer than that, your options are:

• FVU-courses - (Preparatory Education for Adults). If you do speak Danish at a certain level, you may qualify for our FVU-courses, which are also free of charge. Please, contact our FVU-coordinator to find out if FVU is an option for you.
• Paying for participating in the official Danish Education Programme. Either on your own or through your workplace. Contact us for more information on prices and different options.
• Our Language Café, where volunteers come to practice speaking Danish with whoever is interested. The Language Café is open to anyone, and it is free of charge. It takes place each Thursday at 4.00 pm - 6.00 pm in the common room at Sprogcenter Vejle.
